A horrific tale unwinds revealing the twisted past of a young woman and the brutal fates of various men who visit Lake Marsh. Throughout the running time of the film, the audience are faced with several cruel and gruesome attacks on men while the torturous life of the woman, which is portrayed in the form of memories towards the end of the film when the twist becomes known to the audience. It is unknown for the first quarter of who the murderer truly is, giving the film a sense of mystery and keeping the audience suspicious and on-edge.
There are several main characters in this film which are as follows:
EMILY: Emily is the ghost and murderer of this film. Her past is revealed throughout the film which consists of sexual assault and domestic violence from her father. This consequently leads to her graphic murder in 1972 at Lake depicted in her memories shown throughout the film. For the three decades that have passed, blood-thirsty Emily seeks revenge on all men who visit the lake for the awful treatment she had received from a young age up to her nineteenth birthday.
RYAN LUCAS: A detective trying to solve the mystery of the forest murders yet struggles to find any evidence, pushing aside any accusations of a ghost in disbelief. However, this soon changes when he is confronted by Emily who aims to give him the same fate as the other men have shared. A twist at the end displays the genetic link between the two, Ryan being Emily and her father's son who she had to give up for adoption at the age of seventeen.
ALEX: Ryan's wife is killed by Emily when attempting to protect her husband at the lake after the revelation of Emily's young son (at this time it is unknown that it is Ryan) being born. Throughout the film she consistently questions Ryan's parentage, subtly hinting towards the twist at the end of the film. Both Alex and Ryan are attempting to have a child, yet Alex only endures 'ghost pregnancies'.
